There are a few ways to determine if you are a victim of click fraud, and prevent future attacks. But, before we reveal the most effective way to detect and prevent click fraud, consider the following…
Studies conducted by Moz, reveal that 80% of search results contain ads from Google Adwords. With more and more companies using Adwords, the risk of advertisers falling victim to click fraud is growing as well. Not to mention to increasing number of court cases related to ad fraud!
The danger of false assumptions:
Another reason that this is becoming a larger problem, is that most advertisers assume that Google will protect their account from fraudulent clicks and so they ignore any warning signs of a problem. Unfortunately, Google is not providing the most effective click fraud detection tools and many advertisers may be putting their business at serious risk.
If you’re like most people, you probably didn’t realize just how immense the issue of click fraud really is. And now, you’re probably starting to ask yourself; “So, how do I find out if I am a victim of click fraud?”
Well, we’ve got the answer right here…
We recently discussed some warning signs of click fraud, but in this post, we will go into further detail so that you can fully protect your business.
First things first, let’s do a quick recap of some basic click fraud facts that you should know.
An article in the Huffington Post describes the main way in which click fraud occurs:
Your competitors are the most common perpetrators. They will click on your ads over and over and once you have reached your daily budget, your ads will no longer display and you will have to pay for all those unwanted clicks. Once your ads are out of the picture, your competitor is free to take over the top spots.
These clicks may be done by real people who physically attack your account, also known as manual click fraud, or by robots designed to click on your ads over and over without you ever knowing it.
Now that your all caught up, onto our main point…
Monitor Your Account: Check your PPC analytics often and look for any odd patterning. If you notice that you are getting a significantly higher number of clicks but your conversions rates are not increasing, you may have a fraudster on your hands. Another sign of a problem includes a sudden spike in your CTR (Click Through Rate). For example, if you typically get 10% CTR and then all of a sudden you start to see 50-60% CTR, this could indicate that a perpetrator is deliberately searching for and clicking on your ads. Finally, if your ads are displaying nationwide and you start to see a massive amount of traffic from a specific location, that is a sign that something is not quite right.
Measure Engagement: Since Google does not measure Key Performance Indicators (KPI) of your website, they are not able to detect click fraud at a local, manual level. So, it is up to you to analyze your data and determine if engagement is suspicious or not.
Report Fraud: If you think that you are a victim of click fraud, you can report your findings to Google and take steps to receive a refund for unwanted clicks. Many people have even gone to court over this. Unfortunately, suing Google is not the answer to the click fraud problem.
All of this information is great but in reality, most advertisers don’t have the time or knowledge base to effectively identify and prevent attacks on their account.
